Have you been looking for natural cleaners for home use that are safer than what is typically marketed as “green” in the stores? While many cleaners may be labeled “green,” many of them still have concerning ingredients. If you are looking for a nontoxic, safe cleaner that is tough enough to kill serious germs, mold, odors, and even remove stains, Force of Nature cleaner may be exactly what you’re looking for.
Force of Nature cleaner uses just water, vinegar, and salt to create a cleaning agent as effective as bleach. It may seem too good to be true, but with the Force of Nature cleaning system, you can use just those three ingredients to create electrolyzed water; a cleaning agent that is 100{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} safe.
More and more people are looking for simplified, non-toxic home cleaners that they feel comfortable using around kids, pets, and themselves.
Not only do conventional cleaners have strong odors that can make people ill, but they are also full of harsh ingredients that can aggravate allergies and asthma, and even give chemical burns.
Many of the chemicals in conventional cleaners are also linked to long-term problems, such as cancer, fertility issues, and neurological issues.
It’s no wonder people are looking for alternative cleaning options!
Force of Nature has been a perfect solution for our home.
It’s really important to me I find a system that gets my house clean as quickly and easily as possible. I don’t have a lot of time (or the desire!) to spend hours scrubbing away at things.
The Force of Nature cleaning system is one of the most multi-purpose cleaners for almost every surface. It is a cleaner that is fierce enough to kill viruses, bacteria, salmonella, mold and mildew, but also gentle enough to allow your kids to use, and for use on surfaces on which you prepare food.
Update October 2019: You can learn all about Force of Nature in this post, but check out my post on the Force of Nature redesign to see what’s different now. Also, check out the end of this post for an AWESOME promo code!
Update March 2020: Force of Nature can be used on hard, non-porous surfaces against COVID-19! See here for more info.
What Is Force of Nature?
Force of Nature is a cleaning appliance that creates an effective cleaning solution using water and capsules of vinegar & salt. It comes with a charging station, a bottle to use on that charging station, and a spray bottle. You fill the bottle with water, add the contents of one capsule, and put it on the charger to electrolyze. Here to see a video I made showing how you create the solution.
This cleaner can work on virtually any surface, which is awesome! I know many of my store-bought green cleaners recommend that they not be used on porous surfaces, so this is a plus. It is safe to be used on surfaces that handle food (like cutting boards or counters) and even pacifiers.
How Does It Work?
Force of Nature works by converting three simple ingredients (water, salt, and vinegar) into two gentle and non-toxic cleaning agents: hypochlorous acid and sodium hydroxide, which are safe and extremely effective. These two agents kill up to 99.9{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} of bacteria and viruses on any surface. Here is a video explaining the science:
Force of Nature does not have any added fragrances, but there is a slight “clean” scent–think of a well-kept swimming pool.
You might get a whiff of a clean chlorine-like smell, but it is not strong at all. I actually find it quite pleasant. I can smell it when I’m in the midst of cleaning, but as soon as I wipe it away, the scent is gone. It does not linger for hours like other strong cleaners.
This is one thing I love about it–the clean smell!
Uses
Force of Nature can be used to do almost anything you need it to do. It is great for:
- A multi-purpose cleaner, such as wiping down the kitchen counters after preparing dinner
- Bathroom cleaner (even for showers and tubs!)
- A disinfectant after someone is sick in the house, or after dealing with raw meat
- Removing stains from carpet
- Attacking mold
- Deodorizing shoes, rugs, & garbage cans
- Removing grease
- Pet accidents on rugs
- Soap scum
- Glass and stainless steel
- Floors (including tile, laminate, wood, & carpet)
Imagine having ONE cleaner to do all of these things! Here are 20 more unexpected uses. You can save a lot of money in the long run. Like I said before, I love my microfiber cloths, but I can’t use them to deodorize my sneakers or clean up pet accidents.
Why Choose Force of Nature?
Some people might be curious about the following: if Force of Nature is just water, vinegar, and salt, why should I spend money on that? Why can’t I just make my own homemade cleaners with vinegar and maybe add essential oils?
Well, you can make your own cleaners if you wish, but here is the advantage that Force of Nature has over homemade vinegar cleaners:
Vinegar, while natural, can actually be somewhat harsh. It can cause burns to the eyes and esophagus, especially if not diluted properly, so you need to be a little more careful with it around children. It can also damage stone surfaces, like granite, quartz, and marble, and can corrode other surfaces (such as grout) over time.
Lastly, vinegar is not a disinfectant or a sanitizer. Many people think it is, but it cannot kill strong bacteria.
Independent Ratings
Force of Nature is EPA registered as a disinfectant and sanitizer. Third-party lab testing results indicated that Force of Nature not just performed as well, but better than many of the leading conventional cleaning brands for soap scum, carpet stains, deodorizing, degreasing, and many other types of messes. You can see the results of the third-party lab testing for yourself by clicking here.
Force of Nature has also received the highest rating by the Mayo Clinic’s product rating scale for skin allergies and irritants called SkinSafe. Click here for more details on Force of Nature’s SkinSafe rating.
Pros and Cons
I have been using this cleaner for a bit now, and I’d love to share with you the pros and cons of this device:
Pros:
- 100{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} safe–no toxic chemicals, no added fragrances, no dyes, no irritants of any kind.
- Can be used freely around kids and pets.
- Cleans almost ANY type of mess, stain, or odor.
- Easy to use.
- Saves money over the long run (averages $0.07/ounce).
- Has top ratings on the Mayo Clinic’s SkinSafe scale and is registered with the EPA.
- A very mild, but pleasant & pure scent that does not overpower or linger.
- Disinfects 99.9{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} of germs, including bacteria, viruses, norovirus, salmonella, listeria, staph, MRSA, and influenza A.
- Deodorizes shoes (a big deal in this house!)
Cons:
- One bottle of solution (water + one capsule) only lasts for 2 weeks. That is because it weakens over time and loses efficacy. However, the bottle is smaller than an average store-bought bottle of cleaner, so you move through it faster, and I have not found waste to be an issue (this was something I was worried about that kept me from buying it for a while, but now that I’m using it, I realized that it doesn’t make too much at one time).
- It can clean dirt and grime off stainless steel and windows, but it can leave streaks so I like to follow those jobs up with a microfiber cloth to make them shiny.
- Some may be turned off at the initial price of the appliance. (Tip: Go to the Force of Nature website and sign up for their newsletter to receive a coupon code. You can find the email signup on almost every page. You should see the orange sign up box at the bottom of the page I link. It may also be on the sidebar on some pages).
Force of Nature vs Norwex
Norwex is another safe, healthy cleaning system that relies on the power of microfiber and the use of BacLock (a silver-based antibacterial agent).
I love Norwex. My Envirocloths are a staple in my home. I also love E-Cloth (a Norwex competitor–also microfiber products) and use those products, too.
Norwex Envirocloths & window cleaning cloths are great for windows and stainless steel, and I do prefer Norwex products for streak-free, shiny cleaning on those particular surfaces.
However, I prefer Force of Nature for almost every other type of cleaning. When it comes to disinfecting, Force of Nature is my go-to, hands down.
Not to be gross, but my 4-year-old woke up in the middle of the night and threw up on his carpet. Do you really think I’m going to use my Envirocloth to clean that up?
Instead, I removed what I could from the carpet and then dumped my Force of Nature solution all over it. This ensured I killed what I could of the germs without bleaching or damaging the carpet at all.
Also, while studies show microfiber does do a great job of removing germs from surfaces, I don’t think the self-sanitizing Baclock agent is all it is cracked up to be. Even when I do my best to rinse my cloths out well and hang dry, they still develop an odor, which is an indication that bacteria is still in the towel.
At the end of the day, there is a place for both products in the home. I love using Force of Nature for most cleaning jobs and then using my Envirocloth when I need to shine something up.
If you wanted to only have one in your home, I would go with Force of Nature. It covers almost every possible job, and there are other ways you can shine up appliances or windows. Even just wiping those surfaces down with a clean, dry cloth after cleaning with Force of Nature will help with the shine.
Why I Use Force of Nature
Finding good natural cleaners for home use isn’t always easy. I have many green brands of cleaners that I love to use, so why did I end up moving to Force of Nature over those other green cleaners?
First of all, while those brands of cleaners were healthier choices than many of the typical leading brands, they weren’t perfect.
Many of them still have ingredients that could cause issues for some people. They were good enough for me at that time, but not perfect enough to stop my search for the best home cleaning solution.
Another reason I moved into using Force of Nature was that many of my favorite green cleaners weren’t recommended on porous surfaces. I loved that I could use this cleaner on literally anything I wanted to.
This leads to my third reason for moving to this cleaner; I could use it on my cutting boards or other areas I deal with food. I wouldn’t dream of spraying any of my other green cleaners on something my food might touch…they may be healthier, but they’re not food safe.
I’m not saying you should spray the Force of Nature solution all over your food just for fun, but there is no need to worry about it getting on your food after using it on your food prep areas.
Another motivation for buying this was to use it on mold. Our shower has areas prone to mold, as do our 30-year-old wooden window frames in our home. Given that mold isn’t healthy for anyone, but especially because I have a child with asthma, I need to keep on top of that. I love that I now have a safe way to do that that doesn’t fill our home with toxic fumes.
I don’t use Force of Nature for EVERY job because I still prefer my microfiber cloths for some things (stainless steel) and I don’t think we need to kill 100{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} of all bacteria all the time, but clearly, there are times when sanitizing is important. The fact that it can do so many jobs that I didn’t have a way to do with a natural cleaner before is awesome.

Force of Nature cleaner sounds really good. And knowing that it only has the ingredients that we kinda use day to day sounds really interesting. I’m actually scared to use artificial cleaners so I think this might be a good alternative for me.
Thank you so much for sharing this information with me.
Glad you found it helpful, Sujandar!
This is certainly interesting. Sometimes it’s so hard to find the right things that can clean and actually work too. Now water make obvious sense to me and so does vinegar.
But salt through me off a bit. I have to really try this combination because there are times I try and clean something and no matter what I use or what I do it won’t come clean! Force of Nature is safe?
It sounds like this is what so many folks have been looking for. If it cleans dirt, grease, scum, and stains, then it’s the miracle cleaner for sure! And I agree with you that mixing my own vinegar concoction could cause a burning sensation that I’m not willing to risk taking. How long does Force of Nature last? Is there an expiration date on it?
Hi Rob! The ingredients of water, salt, and vinegar are what are needed to make electrolyzed water. Then the device sends an electrical current through the water, which changes the chemical composition of the solution, resulting in hypochlorus acid (main ingredient) and sodium hydroxide. You won’t be able to make the solution just by mixing them in a bottle, you need the electrical current. Hope that makes sense!
One bottle of solution lasts 2 weeks, and that’s just because the bubbles weaken over time (much like how a carbonated drink will fizzle out). It’s not dangerous or anything at that point, just not as effective. It doesn’t make a large quantity at one time, so for most people it will make a good amount.
I have never heard of this science or technology, and I have to say I find it fascinating, absolutely wonderful! I know you listed the initial cost as a con, and I guess $89 can seem like a lot of money, but honestly, can you put a price on your health? Cleaning products are so bad, and yet we want our homes clean. I really think that to be able to clean all your surfaces and disinfect them safely, that’s a bargain! Thanks for introducing me to this! I’m so glad!
Hi Babsie! You’re absolutely right, you can’t put a price on your health. There are also frequently promo codes and sales available, so you can often end up getting the device discounted, which is amazing!
Hi, this product has intrigued me. First off, thank you for including the videos. They answered a few of my questions. The first one also made me laugh – the binky whisperer and all of the other names they came up for people that had different cleaning jobs.
I don’t know if these will be questions that you can help me with or not. If not, maybe you can point me to the correct direction. Basically, I see the benefits of being able to use this product in my house. What I am really searching for is a product that I can use out on the farm in the areas where I keep baby chickens, eggs and my milk goats that I am trying to manage organically. In each case, cleanliness with no dangerous chemicals is very important. So, questions:
1. Is these cleaning product classified as USDA certified organic?
2. Even though three basic ingredients are used, I am assuming the machine is what make the mixture do it’s magic. Otherwise, I could mix the solution myself. Do you know how long these machines will last? I would possibly want to mix a quart to a gallon of the solution at a time to cover the areas that I have in mind.
3. The picture shows a little spray bottle being used. Are you aware of any reason that a larger bottle or sprayer could not be used?
Thanks in advance,
Hi Sondra! These are some great questions. I did some digging and also reached out to the company to get some clarification for you. I’ll update when I hear back, but here is what I know so far:
1. I’m not entirely sure, but I did find this post on the Force of Nature blog post that talks about organic food, and towards the end they mention that it could be used to wash fruits and veggies. I’m not sure if that totally answers your question, and I’m hoping to hear back from the company on this soon. Here is the blog post in the meantime: https://www.forceofnatureclean…
2. You are right that it is the machine that does the magic! It sends an electrical current to break up the molecules to electrolyze the water. I imagine making a gallon at a time would be tedious–it makes around a cup or cup and a half (maybe a little more–I’ll check when I get home) at a time, and it takes about 5 minutes to do it. At this time, they do not have a device that can make a larger amount. There are industrial devices out there that do the same thing, but those aren’t really meant for home use and I imagine are expensive and hard to get. You could probably make a bottle’s worth, fill your spray bottle, set another bottle up to electrolyze, and during that 5 minute wait get to work on disinfecting and cleaning. Then when that spray bottle is empty, the next one is ready to go for you right away. But if you were hoping to make a bucket full of it at one time, I don’t think it’s set up for that yet. As for how long it lasts, that’s a great question. I can’t seem to find anything in any reviews anywhere about the lifespan of the appliance. It seems to be well made.
3. The only reason the spray bottle is small is because that is the size one capsule will make, and what the appliance will make at one time. I see no reason why you couldn’t make a couple batches back to back and put them in your own spray bottle.
Hope you found this helpful, thanks for your awesome questions!
Hi Sondra! I got a reply from the company about the organic nature of the product:
“Salt isn’t eligible [for organic labeling] because it’s classified as a mineral. Organic vinegar by definition has to be free of preservatives, gluten and genetically modified organisms, yet in reality vinegar doesn’t use preservatives and can’t contain gluten or genetically modified organisms.”
Hope that answers your question!
I really enjoyed your review of this product. I have four children and would love to have had such a produce twenty years ago! Any parent can attest to the destructive nature of kids and how they require a lot of cleanup!
Who wants to have strong chemicals in the home! We all have some fear that these chemicals are causing us damage over time.
We also have multiple dogs living in the house with us. Kids and dogs equals multiple messes. Of course, you want a clean home that is as germ free as reasonably possible, but strong cleansers are likely not friendly to animals either. Dogs frequently get themselves into whatever we use to clean and are often even more exposed than children.
But here is another consideration – we have a septic system and you cannot use many harsh chemicals like bleach with a septic system – you can’t use bleach in or around the sink or bath for example.
I was a chemistry minor in college so I can understand the basic science of electrolysis of water and how that would make sodium hydroxide. It is a really interesting idea!
Thanks for the product information and I will investigate your link to the site.
Dave.
Hi Dave! Force of Nature is safe for septic systems, and you’re right that so many other conventional cleaners aren’t. Great point!
It’s definitely a great cleaning option for people with kids or pets.
Many times while using bleach or other chemicals to clean, the fumes are so strong that irritates me to my throat. Some of these products also irritates my skin as well and are very corrosive. I really like this force of nature, it’s all natural and seems to also be very effective. Personally, I have to admit that sometimes I use vinegar and baking soda to clean my bathroom and kitchen surfaces. It does woks but as you rightly mentioned, trying to mix this using estimated proportions might not be accurate. I really like that it has multiple purposes.
I enjoyed reading this review and I can’t wait to start using this product. Where is this available for purchase and how much does it cost.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Brenda! There’s nothing wrong with using vinegar and baking soda to clean, and they have many great uses! They just can be a little more finicky and don’t disinfect. It’s nice to have a natural option comparable to Clorox or Lysol!
The Force of Nature website (link) is the best place to purchase. You can click the link in the previous sentence or any of the links in the article to take you there. It is also sold on Amazon, but you can get better deals and promo codes for the website.
Thanks for the information Holly
No problem!
This was a very good read, i was not familiar with this product until i read your article, i had seen other “natural” cleaning, usually citrus based one but the orangy smell was overwhelming at times, Not having a really powerful odor associated with it is a huge selling point for me, thanks for the information and keep up the good work.
Thanks Mike! Glad you found it helpful.
Force of Nature I never hear of it before and being a mum we are always looking for chemical free products I was very surprised when you said that it just contains 3 ingrediencies that can clean so many ways. We normally have a different product for each part of the house but with this it looks like its a all in one.
Thanks for the info and I am sure to try it out soon.
No problem, I’m glad you found it helpful!
Hi,
I really like your site. Its clean concise and explains your product well. What theme are you using, it works well for you. I would suggest one addition to your site. If you scroll down the page you will notice that the social media widget stays on the top of the page and dose not scroll away. The plugin Q2W3 Fixed Widget will do the same for your right hand side bar and keep your offered products visible as the reader moves down your page.
Looking good. keep up the good work.
Winslow
Thanks Winslow! It is a Blossom Feminine Theme. I’ll look into the plug in, thanks for the tips!
This product has my interest because I am forever dealing with allergies in the form of sinus problems and sneezing and stuffy nose. I am also sensitive to heavily scented products and it shows every time I do a day of cleaning around my home. I am glad to see that Force of Nature also treats mold, a nuisance in our home.
I am also concerned about having household chemicals in my kitchen and always had to be careful to stow them away for the sake of the kids, even though the cleaners are in a cupboard above their heads. My biggest concern is about the residue on my kitchen counter and cutting boards and Force of nature seems to take care of that. Your description introduces a safe all purpose cleaner. I would love to try it. Thanks
Glad you found it helpful, JJ!
Hello Holly,
Thank you for posting the information about Force of Nature Cleaner. We have to be careful to read the labels of everything before we use it in our home. I appreciate that you posted the cons about the product.
My daughter was first to bring the product to my attention because I keep my 2 year old granddaughter sometime. We love that it has no toxic chemicals and irritants. My daughter has very sensitive skin but she is able to use the Force of Nature Cleaner.
It is a little pricey, but they spare no expense when it comes to that little baby girl. It is a great product and worth the money in my family.
V. Pearl
That’s awesome! I’m glad you guys have been enjoying the product.
This is a fabulous article. I love simple cleaning products without toxic chemicals. You go into great detail about this cleaner and the videos are great. I can tell that you believe strongly in products that are safe for your family and it’s that personal touch that shows you want to share this with others who are already using natural cleaners as well as those who yet to make the switch. I am definitely interested in trying this!
Thanks so much, Stephanie! I’m glad you enjoyed the article.
What a masterful piece from you Holly, thanks a lot your very enriching review about this product. I’ve got a lot of great insights, well done!
Glad you found it helpful!
Thanks for this insightful review Holly! I have never heard of Force of Nature before, but I would definitely like to try it! The cost per ounce of this is incredible- I spend so much money on cleaners and purchasing this would actually help my budget! If you’re looking for other non-toxic cleaning solutions, you should check out this blog I found. They post lots of cleaning tips and tricks!
Thanks!
