This is part two of my Cloth Diapering with a Newborn post–click the link to read the first part! This post, we will look at the best newborn cloth diapers that you could get for your baby.

We left off in the last post understanding that some of the best diaper styles for cloth diapering with a newborn were prefolds and covers, fitteds and covers, and all-in-ones. But within those styles, there are so many brands to choose from. Which brands are the best?

It’s important to clarify up front that some babies get a great fit with one particular diaper or cover, while other babies may not get a great fit with that diaper/cover. It depends a lot on the baby–especially on the sizes of those little legs and thighs! They can vary so much. This post will showcase some of the most universally loved newborn options.

Prefolds

OsoCozy Prefolds are a popular option for many families. They are 100{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} cotton, absorbent, quality, and economical. One thing I love about prefolds in general is that they have awesome around-the-house uses after your baby is out of diapers. I use mine for cleaning rags now since I don’t use as many prefolds with my 18-month-old anymore. These come in a variety of sizes to get the best fit for your growing baby.

grovia-prefoldsGrovia Prefolds are another fabulous option. They are very trim and soft. These prefolds are 55{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} Rayon made from bamboo and 45{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} cotton, which gives them the potential to be a little more absorbent than other prefolds made from 100{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} cotton. These are an excellent choice for max absorbency and a trim fit. There are several sizes to choose from if you wish to use prefolds as your baby grows.

Green Mountain Diapers also has some of the most popular prefolds around!

Fitteds

imagine-baby-fittedImagine Baby Newborn Fitteds 2.0s are an awesome choice for an economical fitted for your baby. They are made from 100{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} bamboo viscose and are very soft. The newborn size fits babies from 5 to 13 pounds, and there are many colors to choose from.

The bamboo soaker can be unsnapped from the diaper while it’s being washed and dried for a quicker drying time, which is always a perk! Sometimes drying time can get long with fitteds.

You can get this fitted in both hook & loop and snap closures. The snap closure version has a snap-down area for the umbilical cord, making these awesome to use right away from birth.

happy-little-clouds-fittedSustainablebabyish Happy Little CloudsΒ is another popular fitted option. This brand is high quality, extremely absorbent, and made from bamboo and cotton. For as trim as they are, they are also really absorbent. The size 1 fits babies from 7-15 lbs, and diaper’s soakers also snap in and out to speed up drying time.

The only downside is these are a little more expensive than some other fitteds, but I have a few fitteds from this brand myself, and they are certainly worth the cost.

One last very popular fitted choice is the Cloth-eez Workhorse Fitted Diaper from Green Mountain Diapers. These have a fabulous reputation and are competitively priced. If you love them during the newborn days, they come in many sizes so you can continue to use them as they get bigger. This diaper secures with snaps and is made from 100{9994046f29331ee04cc0b5e07eb28364315ea03ccc2f01b5a43e8b85b372d1e9} cotton. The inner soaker is again a flap that can help ease drying time. These are definitely a solid choice!

Covers and Accessories

The prefolds suggested here will also need a Snappi (recommended) or pins.

Snappis replace diaper pins are quick, easy and awesome to use. They will last a long time–one pack should be sufficient. They are easy to do one handed, which is why many moms and dads love them!

All fitteds and prefolds will need a diaper cover as a waterproof layer.thirsties-duo-cover

For newborn sized covers, the Thirsties Duo Wrap Diaper Cover is a very popular choice for many families. Size one fits babies from 6 to 18 lbs, so you can get many months of use out of these covers. You can get snap or hook & loop closures, and they are very economical compared to other covers. Bonus with this cover is that is corresponds with an insert and can be used as an all-in-two system–so you can use the cover with the prefolds, fitteds, AND inserts–they are very versatile!

rumparooz-newborn-coverAnother great newborn cover is the Rumparooz Newborn Diaper Covers. These diapers can come with snap closures or hook & loop. They can be adjusted to fit babies as small as four pounds, making them an excellent choice if you know you tend to have small babies with chicken legs (like me!) They will last up until 12 lbs and come in a wide variety of colors and prints. They are economical and receive top ratings. You can’t go wrong choosing this cover!

grovia-newborn-aioAll-in-Ones

Grovia Newborn AIOs are a fabulous and convenient choice for a newborn all-in-one diaper. This diaper fits babies from 5-12 lbs. The internal soaker has two layers of hemp & cotton, the external soaker has 3 layers of hemp/cotton topped with microfleece for moisture-wicking, and an outer waterproof layer of TPU. The Grovia Newborn AIOs also have many colors and some prints to choose from. There is a reason this brand is regarded so highly!

bumgenius-littles-aio-2BumGenius Littles 2.0 Organic All-in-One is another great all-in-one choice. They are economical and adorable. The cotton lining is absorbent and soft against baby’s skin. The front of the diaper dips a little to allow room for the umbilical stump and not rub against it. These diapers work best for babies 6-12 lbs.

I love them because I was able to get a really good fit on my small baby, however they did out-wet the absorbency a little before 12 lbs. It is probably not the most absorbent all-in-one, but they are economical, you can get a great fit on those tiny babies, and they will usually get you to a point where you can start using your one-size diapers by the time they start out-wetting them.thirsties-aio-newborn

Thirsties Newborn All in Ones are one of my favorite newborn diapers I’ve used. They are very absorbent and I got a great fit on my skinny babies. It works best for babies 5-14 lbs, which is a pretty wide range for a newborn diaper! It’s available in both snap closures and hook & loop.

There is a belly-button snap down that you can utilize while the umbilical stump is healing. This diaper has four layers of microfiber-terry, a microfleece liner for moisture-wicking, and an outer waterproof layer. They are such a comfortable diaper–I loved putting them on my baby. There are many colors and prints to choose from!

One-Sized Options to Try

If your baby is big enough and you want to see if some one-size will work, the following brands run smaller and may be good to try.

Get Going on Your Stash!

If you are planning to use cloth diapers during the newborn weeks, you will want to get going on your stash! I recommend getting a variety of different diaper styles because it is hard to predict what will work best for your baby. I ended up loving some newborn diapers I didn’t think I would, and some diapers I thought were going to be great just didn’t fit my skinny babies.

The diapers represented here all have great reputations and would be solid choices for your stash. You will do just fine to try any of them.
